Navigating Change: WISTA UK Event Highlights Diversity in Maritime

The recent WISTA UK event on 29 November 2023 illuminated the maritime industry’s commitment to diversity and inclusion. Held at the In and Out Club London, the evening brought together esteemed speakers and industry leaders to discuss key issues and initiatives driving positive change.

The event commenced with a vibrant champagne reception at 6:00 pm, setting the stage for a night dedicated to celebrating diversity. Jucilla Walters from Waves set the tone for the evening, welcoming everyone, followed by Lord Mountevans, Vice Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Committee, Maritime, who delivered an opening address, emphasising the industry’s collective responsibility in fostering inclusivity.

Gina Panayiotou, membership secretary of WISTA UK, introduced the following three speakers. Guy Platten, Secretary General of the International Chamber of Shipping, took the stage at 8:15 pm, addressing the gender gap within the seafaring community. Platten applauded WISTA’s impactful initiatives and urged industry members to embrace diversity for a stronger, more resilient future.

Heather Enness, a Merchant Navy Medal Recipient and ardent advocate for women at sea, shared her experiences and called for increased efforts in educating students about maritime careers. Enness emphasised the need for volunteers to engage with schools and inspire the next generation of seafarers.

Commander Helen Coxon, a distinguished Royal Navy officer, captivated the audience with her journey from recruitment to assuming command of HMS ST ALBANS. Her story highlighted the enduring passion that fuels maritime professionals.

The next speaker was Phil Parry, Chairman of Spinnaker, who addressed the critical issue of the seafarer shortage and announced during the event that WISTA UK is committed to covering the cost of a female MLOCS Cadet’s three-year training. This initiative, part of the broader Maritime London Officer Cadet Scholarship program, aims to support aspiring merchant navy officers and promote diversity within the industry.

The event concluded with a closing address by Elpi Petraki, President of WISTA International and a vote of thanks from Sue Terpilowski, Membership Secretary of WISTA UK.

The event was a powerful testament to the maritime sector’s dedication to creating a more inclusive and diverse workforce. WISTA UK’s initiatives and the impactful stories shared by speakers underscored the industry’s ongoing efforts to navigate change and build a brighter future for all.
