WISTA UK would like to cover the cost of a Female MLOCS Cadet’s three-year training.
MLOCS was set up in 1992 by senior figures working in the Lloyd’s insurance market (it was originally named the Lloyd’s Officer Cadet Scholarship) to raise funds to support young people wanting to become merchant navy officers both to enhance the merchant navy and to provide a source of future seafaring experience for the potential benefit of the maritime services industry.
MLOCS scholarships pay for the tuition and examination fees of cadets as well as bursaries to the cadets themselves, plus the fees of a cadet-management company, Chiltern Maritime, which is responsible for the selection of cadets and the supervision of their training, including sea training placements through to the award of their Certificates of Competency.
Chiltern acts as a bridge between MLOCS and each cadet throughout their training, providing quarterly reports on progress. Each cadet submits periodic reports to MLOCS to be passed to their sponsor.
The UK Government supports the process by contributing to the cost of cadet training through the Support for Maritime Training (SMarT) fund. To qualify for SMarT funding, MLOCS employs each sponsored Cadet on similar terms to those used by the shipowners.
When each cadet completes their training, Chiltern undertakes to find them their first employment at sea.
In the critically important shipping industry, MLOCS works to help educate the well-qualified officers of tomorrow (and to create safer ships and cleaner seas) and aims to help all who need scholarships, especially disadvantaged and diverse candidates.
