In today’s professional world, how you speak matters just as much as what you say. David Pope, an executive voice coach, hosted a workshop for WISTA UK members and revealed fascinating insights into developing executive presence through voice and body language.
For the past 30 years, David has helped many people to maximise their vocal impact, increase their confidence as speakers and enhance their executive presence through his coaching. David has delivered CPD-accredited communication skills workshops to many international legal firms and global financial institutions, coaching CEOs, senior partners, and executives globally, including Clyde & Co, HSBC, JP Morgan, Goldman Sachs, Bloomberg, Estee Lauder and Microsoft to name a few.
Participants learnt how they can best convey gravitas to speak with authority and confidence in any speaking situation through specific vocal and physical techniques, including:
Your voice speaks volumes
People quickly judge your confidence and credibility by how you speak. Slow, deliberate pacing signals authority, while pitch and tone influence how others perceive you. A well-modulated voice conveys trust and professionalism.
Breathe from your diaphragm
Diaphragmatic breathing strengthens your voice and lowers your pitch, making it sound more resonant. It also helps reduce nervousness, giving you a calm, controlled delivery.
Master vocal variety
Using pauses, varying speed, and adjusting volume keeps your audience engaged and highlights key points. Vocal variety adds emphasis and makes your communication more dynamic.
Body language matters
Open gestures and purposeful hand movements project confidence. An open posture signals authority and ensures your physical presence matches your vocal strength.
Authenticity is key
Rather than changing your voice, focus on finding your unique, powerful communication style. With practice, you can deliver your message authentically and effectively.
David’s final key point was to record yourself speaking and analyse your vocal patterns. Small adjustments can make a big difference in how you’re perceived.
Developing gravitas is a skill anyone can learn with practice and self awareness, and we thank David for this insightful session.
