The Nigerian chapter of Women’s International Shipping and Trading Association (WISTA), has concluded arrangements to celebrated its 20th anniversary.
According to the statement which was made available to THISDAY, WISTA Nigeria was established with the aim of giving voice and visibility to the needs and concerns of women working in the shipping sector of the economy as well as international trade.
It said the association which started with a few members has today become a focal point for professionals in the field. It has since spread its tentacles beyond the shores of Nigeria as it has held conferences and regional meetings within and outside Nigeria.
The statement pointed out that at the heart of WISTA’s mission is the professional advancement of its members, learning and sharing of ideas and application of best practices among others.
Speaking on the heels of its anniversary celebration, the President of WISTA, Nigeria, Mrs. Jean Anishere, said: “WISTA has constantly strove to add value to its members’ experience by enhancing their professional and business growth.”
According to Anishere, who is also a Lagos-based legal practitioner, recognising the huge potential accruable to members through capacity building as well as creation of multiple business opportunities, the body has continued to organise knowledge acquisition seminars, public lectures, workshops, and publications targeted at enabling and enhancing networking amongst members both at local and international levels.
She maintained that WISTA has not only cut a niche for itself as a professional body known for its commitment to its members’ professional and business advancement, it is known as a credible organisation with a track record of success and impact.
“In public domain, WISTA has become very relevant as it serves as an effective platform to engage with business leaders, policy and decision makers. Furthermore, it regularly analyses and makes submissions to government on policy and legislative proposals that have bearing on shipping and international trade,” she added.
On activities lined up to celebration the anniversary of the association, WISTA, Nigeria Public Relations Officer, Oby Nweke said “a three-day events has been drawn up to mark the group’s 20 years of existence.
She disclosed that the activities will kick off on June 29, 2014 with a symphony orchestra at the MUSON Centre.
According to Obi, there will also a visit to a charity home; a lecture by Mrs Monica Mbanefo and a dinner for invited guests.
